Punctuation creates rhythm and reduces ambiguity. In general, Monash University uses open rather than closed punctuation. In short, this means we take a minimalist approach – we use enough punctuation to aid readability, but not so much that it clutters up the text.

Consult the Macquarie Dictionary fifth edition and the Style Manual: For Authors, Editors and Printers, 6th Edition, for all punctuation and style issues not covered by this guide.
