Education at Monash

Monash is dedicated to enriching the learning experiences for its students. Our student-centred approach takes full advantage of new directions in teaching, learning and technology to provide an education of the highest quality.

The university aims to produce graduates who are prepared to challenge conventional wisdom, commit themselves to life long learning and make a positive contribution to the societies in which they live.

Here are a selection of awards and achievements in education at Monash in 2007:

Student achievements

  • Ezwan Aizat Abdullah Faiz, a first year Bachelor of Computer Science student, walked away with the main prize in one of Malaysia's top programming events in 2007.

  • Four Monash MBA students scooped the pool at last year's John Heine Entrepreneurial Challenge, Australia's only national venture capital competition for graduate students. The Monash team, Zipper Enterprises, were overall winners defeating teams from universities across Australia with their new concept in water transportation. They went on to represent Australia at the 2007 Global MOOT CORP Competition held in Austin, Texas, in May 2007.

  • A final year Bachelor of Business and Commerce student at Monash University's South Africa campus, Mohammed Kabiru Aliyu, was short listed for a Mandela Rhodes Scholarship in 2007.

  • Monash PhD researcher Ms Fleur Tynan was named one of six winners of the 2006 Victoria Fellowships. Her research at Monash University's Protein Crystallography Unit is focusing on interactions between proteins that occur in the body in response to a viral threat.

Education awards

  • Professor Rob Hyndman was awarded the Moran Medal for 2007 by the Australian Academy of Science for outstanding research in statistical science. Professor Hyndman's statistical models have been used in forecasting cancer mortality, fertility, population, business sales and government expenditure.

  • Professor David Healy, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has been named President elect of the International Federation of Fertility Sciences (IFFS) at its recent World Congress.

  • Ms Julianne Tilbury has become the first general staff member at Monash University to receive a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from the 2007 Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching.

Education developments

  • The Graduate School of Business (GSB) has re-affirmed its position as one of the top Master of Business Administration (MBA) providers in the world following the release of the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2007 MBA rankings.

  • Monash's Peninsula campus has further strengthened its commitment to health with the official opening of the Department of Physiotherapy in August 2007.

  • Global water professionals will look to Australia for resources management expertise after the recent launch of the Masters Degree of Integrated Water Management at Monash University. The first cohort of students will commence in Semester 1 2008.

  • Monash introduced an architecture program in 2008. It is the only course of its kind in Australia established in an art and design faculty environment and is a 5-year, 2-degree program, consisting of the Bachelor of Architectural Design and Master of Architecture programs.

  • Government ministers, University staff and physiotherapists recently celebrated the official opening of the Department of Physiotherapy at Monash University Peninsula campus.
