University Librarian, Cathrine Harboe-Ree

As University Librarian at Monash University, Cathrine Harboe-Ree, BSocSci (Librarianship),  is responsible for management and leadership of the University Library, including Monash University Publishing. Cathrine is a Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association.

Professional background

Cathrine Harboe-Ree began as University Librarian in February 2002. Before this, she was Director Collections and Services at the State Library of Victoria. She has previously been the Literature Executive at Arts Victoria and a manager of public libraries.

Ms Harboe-Ree represents Monash University (the lead agency) on the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) Steering Committee and has administrative responsibility for ANDS functions based at Monash. She is the immediate past president of the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Australian Academic and Research Libraries.

Ms Harboe-Ree is a leader in the transformation of libraries in response to the changing scholarly communication environment. She formed and led the ARROW project, which was a major contributor to the development of institutional repositories in Australia, established the University's press, Monash University Publishing, and has been a champion of library leadership of research data management for many years. In this capacity she was a member of the Federal Government eResearch Coordinating Committee.

Ms Harboe-Ree has led a similar transformation of the Library's contribution to the University's learning and teaching activities, including reconceptualising the Library's physical facilities as student-centered learning spaces, and assuming responsibility for learning skills within a continuum of skills development. She is currently one of 50 members of the international Horizon 2014 Expert Panel.

Ms Harboe-Ree is an active professional contributor, participating in CAUL, CAVAL, ALIA, CAUDIT and Monash University mentoring and professional development programs.
