Professor Pauline Nestor - Vice-Provost (Research)

As Vice-Provost (Research), Professor Pauline Nestor is responsible for

  • Working with the Provost to deliver relevant sections of the research strategy
  • Maintaining and improving the University's competitive research performance and working with faculties to enhance their strategic research priorities
  • Driving new research initiatives
  • Responding to changes in government policy relating to research
  • Research compliance and quality assurance (ACRCR)

Professional background

Before her appointment to the Vice-Provost (Research) role, Professor Nestor was Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts, as well as serving as Academic Adviser to the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).

Professor Nestor was educated in Australia and England. After a BA (Hons) at Melbourne University, she attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and completed her Masters and Doctorate degrees in nineteenth-century English literature and culture.

She was a foundation board member of the Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority and a member of the Victorian Higher Education Accreditation Committee, and has been a member of the ARC College of Experts.

Research interests

Professor Nestor has written extensively on nineteenth-century English women writers, especially George Eliot, the Brontes and Elizabeth Gaskell. Her books include George Eliot (Palgrave, 2002), Charlotte Bronte (Women Writers) (Macmillan, 1987), Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre (Harvester Wheatsheaf, 1992) and Female Friendships and Communities (Clarendon, 1985).
