05 Jul 2016

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop MP was on hand to launch a new federal government initiative – the New Colombo Plan – at the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This will offer international scholarships and internships to Australian undergraduate students in Monash Malaysia, among others.

Ms Bishop met with Monash Malaysia's Pro Vice-Chancellor, Helen Bartlett as well as exchange students from the University. The event led to a robust discussion of Australia-Malaysia relations, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Australia's diplomatic presence in the country.

The New Colombo Plan aims to increase students' knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia. The Australian government plans to offer undergraduate students scholarships and grants for study and internships in the Indo-Pacific region. Ms Bishop highlighted the significance of the program, encouraging students to experience Asia and further their education and understanding of other cultures.
