Professor Simon Molesworth

Professor Simon Molesworth (BA 1975, LLB 1977) is one of Australia's leading   environmental lawyers.

He is Executive Committee Chairman of the International National Trusts   Organisation. He is also an Honorary Chairman at MC/CFS Australia Ltd. Until   June 2010 he was the non-executive chairman of Greenearth Energy Limited, a   geothermal energy company.

In 2010 he joined Melbourne’s La Trobe University as an Adjunct Professor in   the Institute for Social and Environmental Sustainability.

From 1980 to 2005 Mr Molesworth was a councillor of the National Trust of   Australia (Victoria), having been its honorary chairman and then president for   almost 20 years.

From 1988 to 2009 he was a board member of the Australian Council of National   Trusts and its chairman from 2001 to 2006.

Professor Molesworth is also a founding member of the Environment Institute   of Australia, guiding its expansion into New Zealand. He was the Institute's   president from 1995 to 2005.

Professor Molesworth's interest in environmental law developed while   undertaking a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws at Monash. Soon after   graduating Mr Molesworth founded and led Australia's first environmental law   association - the Environmental Law Section of the Law Institute of   Victoria.

In 1983 Professor Molesworth became the inaugural president of the National   Environmental Law Association. A year later he was admitted to the Victorian Bar   and took silk in 1995, specialising in environmental, planning, local   government, heritage and natural resource law.

In addition to his environmental law commitments, Mr Molesworth is a   long-term advocate for people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In 2006,   Tattersall's recognised Mr Molesworth's work in this field by announcing him as   the winner of the Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement. .

In 1994 Professor Molesworth was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia   for his service to the community in the field of conservation and the   environment.

In 2003 he received a United Nations Association of Australia World   Environment Day Award for Outstanding Service to the environment.

In 2005 Monash University recognised Professor Molesworth's work with a Distinguished Alumni Award.

In 2012 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for "distinguished service to conservation and the environment, to heritage preservation at national and international levels, to the professions and natural resource sectors, and to community health organisations."
