Have you ever met someone with bucket loads of energy and a  great personality and come away thinking: that person could do anything!

Meet alumnus Matt Bebe (BSc 1990, GradDipEd 1990).

We are  fairly sure he’ll also be the envy of all of his friends from his Monash days.  Why? He loves his work. And his work just happens to be running his own  brewery!

Hailing from a family of teachers, it was a natural  progression to follow in their footsteps after graduation. Matt quickly found  work as a science teacher and went on to become Head of Mathematics at The  Peninsula School on the Mornington Peninsula.

After a short stint in pharmaceutical sales, Matt’s skills  as an educator saw him move to global medical technology business Smith &  Nephew as the company’s national training manager.

After five years with Smith  & Nephew, Matt spent four years working in human resources. His next stop:  realising his dream of opening his own business.

So how do you go from being passionate about craft beer to  managing your own brewery?

It started with a football match. Not just any football  match but the 2008 AFL Grand Final.

After Matt’s team Hawthorn won against arch  rivals Geelong, it was time to celebrate. It was during this celebration that  the pair decided that the Mornington Peninsula needed another brewery. They  started brewing their own beer in Matt’s garage.

With his excellent planning and communication skills, Matt’s  dream quickly outgrew the garage. After lots of late nights and hard work he opened The Mornington Peninsula  Brewery in 2010.

Five years on, the company employs 20 staff, makes $3m in  annual revenue and has seen 40 per cent growth year on year.

Matt says his time as a teacher helped him to become a  comfortable communicator, a good listener and a very good planner.

He firmly  believes that an education degree is a good foundation for many, many careers.
