NEWS FROM MONASH

1.1 MALARIA VACCINE BOOST FOR MONASH RESEARCHERS

The search for a vaccine for malaria has intensified after Monash
University researchers received a major international grant to help
their assault on the deadly disease. Monash University and biotechnology
company Progen Industries will receive $AUD3.1 million from the US-based
Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation. For more information, see

1.2 HIGH-TECH RESEARCH FACILITY OPENS

A multimillion dollar, state-of-the-art Rodent Breeding and Research
Facility, designed to breed Specific Pathogen Free rodents, has been
launched at Monash. The facility will help provide the first adequate
source of high-standard rodents to Victoria's biomedical research
community. Launching the facility recently, deputy vice-chancellor
(Research and Development) Professor Peter Darvall said he believed the
facility would play an important role in furthering biomedical research
in Victoria.

1.3 MONASH LAW STUDENTS SEEK REPRIEVE FOR DEATH ROW INMATES

Three Monash law students are in Louisiana providing legal
representation and assistance to inmates facing the death penalty. Ms
Olivia Henderson, Mr Nicholas Button and Ms Marissa Dreher are
undertaking a three-month internship at legal assistance centres in New
Orleans under the Reprieve Australia intern program. Reprieve Australia
Inc. provides legal assistance to impoverished Death Row prisoners in
the US and the Caribbean. For more information, see

1.4 MONASH UNIVERSITY DEBATERS ARE WORLD CLASS

A Monash University debating team has finished among the world's top
four universities in the 2002 World Universities Debating Championship
held at the University of Toronto this month. The team, comprising
fourth-year arts/law students Ms Amanda Wolthuizen and Mr Michael Smith,
defeated teams from universities including Oxford and Cambridge to reach
the grand final of the prestigious event. Monash was the only Australian
university to feature in the top four. The other finalists were
University College Dublin, Durham University and New York University

1.5 VALE PROFESSOR CHRIS SILAGY

Tributes have poured in for Monash Institute of Health Services Research
director Professor Chris Silagy AO, who died on December 13 aged 41.
Professor Silagy was a recognized world leader in evidence-based
healthcare. Donations to the 'Monash University Medical Foundation -

1.6 TERTIARY OFFERS 2002 - RESURGENCE IN DEMAND FOR GENERALIST EDUCATION

Strong demand for entry into a combination of arts, science and
Education courses at Monash University has underlined a resurgence of
student interest in obtaining a broad-based generalist education. For

1.7 PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS LOOK TO MORE HARD-EDGED IT COURSES

Students considering tertiary courses in IT are moving towards
harder-edged degrees in what is a likely reaction to the international
downturn in the dotcom industry, according to the dean of IT at Monash
University, Australia's largest IT faculty. Professor John Rosenberg
says his school is experiencing significant interest in "heavier" IT

2.4 MONASH GIPPSLAND ALUMNI AND STAFF REUNION

Former students and staff are invited to attend the Monash Gippsland
reunion on Friday, Mar 1 2002. The reunion will include graduates from
the three major stages of Monash Gippsland's history: Yallourn Technical
School/College, 1928-1968; Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education,

2.5 UNVEILING OF BUST OF PROFESSOR ERIC GLASGOW

The official unveiling of the bronze bust of Professor Eric Ferguson
Glasgow will take place at 6 pm on Wednesday 27 March in the Anatomy
Courtyard, Building 13C on the Clayton campus. Alumni, staff and former

2.6 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Law and the International Institute of Forensic Studies
will hold their inaugural conference examining the presentation of
expert opinion evidence, at Prato, Italy, in July 2002. The
International Institute of Forensic Studies has been established to
promote research and education relating to the functioning and processes

2.8 2003 INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences has re-scheduled
its international medical conference, 'The New World of Medicine', to
run from May 6-10, 2003 at the university's learning centre in Prato,

3.1 AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS 2002: MONASH UNIVERSITY RECIPIENTS

Monash University congratulates alumni and former staff who received
awards in the Australia Day list this year. Among the recipients were
Emeritus Professor Charles Bridges-Webb (MD 1971), Mavis Marjorie
Gallienne (AssocDipArts (WelfareStuds) 1995), and Emeritus Professor
John Melvin Swan (DSc 1994), who were each awarded an AO (Officer of the

3.2 WRITER DON WATSON'S ESSAY ON AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY CREATES DEBATE

Don Watson's (PhD Arts 1977) recent contribution to the Quarterly Essay
series, 'Rabbit Syndrome: Australia and America: Quarterly Essay No. 4',
has generated significant debate on the issues of Australia's

3.3 BACHELOR OF BUSINESS GRADUATE FINDS HIS NICHE IN NY

After earning his Bachelor of Business (International Trade) in 2000,
Ben Donegan set sail for New York, where he now leads the online
marketing initiatives for Pall Corporation, a prominent global player in
hi-tech filtration systems. Ben's work includes direct email strategy,
increasing the online audience at www.pall.com and integrating the
corporate website with the efforts of other marketing teams in the

3.4 MONASH ALUMNUS WINS EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR BEST BUSINESS LAW STUDENT

Michael Rush has been named this year's winner of the European prize for
the best business law student, sponsored by the Financial Times and
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Rush, who holds first class honours
degrees from Monash in Economics and Law, picks up 12,500 Euros (7825
pounds) and the offer of a six-month secondment to Freshfields. Rush,
who is currently undertaking studies towards a Bachelor of Civil Law at
Magdalen College, Oxford, has the option of declining the cash prize and
taking 25,000 Euros to fund his studies. For more information, see

4.1 'NURSES: THE PATIENT EXPERTS' BY ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR HELGA KUHSE

Traditionally, nurses have accepted a subservient role to doctors. But
bioethicist and honorary senior research fellow at Monash University,
Associate Professor Helga Kuhse, believes nurses today should play a
central role in decision making in the health care industry. For more

5.3 MONASH MALAYSIA: BUSINESS ENGLISH AND EFFECTIVE SPEAKING SKILLS

5.4 PELS: A NEW PATHWAY TO POSTGRADUATE STUDY

The introduction of the national Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme
(PELS) makes it even easier to access postgraduate study at Monash. The
PELS scheme provides an interest-free loan facility for eligible
Australian citizens and permanent residents who commence fee-paying
postgraduate coursework award programs from Jan 1 2002. PELS
