1.1 MONASH MALAYSIA TO OUTGROW CURRENT LOCATION

Monash University Malaysia has experienced exceptional growth -
increasing its student population by almost seven times within its first
four years of operation. The Vice-Chancellor of Monash University
Professor David Robinson said that at this rate Monash University
Malaysia could shortly become the third largest campus of the

1.2 MONASH PROFESSOR APPOINTED AS FOUNDING DEAN AT CANADIAN UNIVERSITY

Monash University's Professor Roger Strasser has been appointed as
founding Dean of the Northern Ontario Medical School at Laurentian
University and Lakehead University, Canada. Professor Strasser's
appointment follows a long and distinguished association with Monash
University that has seen him emerge as a pioneer of rural health as a
discreet clinical and academic discipline. For more information, see

1.3 NEW EXTENSION OPENS JAPANESE-STYLE

With Japanese drums beating in the background, guests were welcomed to
the official opening of the Japanese Studies Centre building extension
last month. Japanese deputy consul-general Mr Hajime Nishimura and other
consular staff joined representatives of the Japanese business
community, key Monash figures and academics from across Melbourne at the

1.4 SUCCESS IN BETTER HANDLING OF CHILD ABUSE CASES

A world-first pilot project for managing Family Court child custody and
access disputes where child abuse allegations are involved has been an
outstanding success, according to a Monash University study. Project
Magellan, an innovative, experimental program based on a model devised
by Monash researchers, was introduced by the Family Court of Australia
in 1998 with the aim of improving the handling of child abuses cases in

2.1 THE VICE-CHANCELLOR'S DEBATE, STEM CELL RESEARCH

The Monash Association of Debaters (MAD) invites you to attend the
annual 'Vice-Chancellor's Debate', from 6.30 pm, May 8, at South 1
Lecture Theatre, Monash University, Clayton Campus. Topic: 'That human
embryos should be used for stem cell research'. For the Affirmative:
Angela Ballantyne, Masters in Bioethics Candidate; Dr Alan Trounson,
Monash Institute for Research and Development; and Professor Julian
Savulescu, Murdoch Children's Research Institute. For the Negative:
Margaret Tighe, Right to Life; Dr. Nick Tonti-Filippini, Bioethicist;
and Anna Krohn, Bioethics educator. A question/answer session follows

2.2 MONASH UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA CAREER FAIR 2002

The Monash University Malaysia Career Fair 2002 will be held on 8 and 9
May, at the Monash Malaysia campus. For information about participating

2.3 MAI SEMINAR, 'SEPTEMBER 11'

The Monash Asia Institute is leading a group scholars and experts
for roundtable discussions about security in the Asia Pacific and its
global implications at the Monash Centre Prato, Italy, 17-18 May, and
at the Monash Centre London, 21 May. The discussions will focus on the
impact of 9/11 on South Asia (the Indian subcontinent) and the changing
security scenario in China. For more information, see

2.4 TRIBUTE TO SIR LOUIS MATHESON KBE MBE CMG

A ceremony will be held in the Robert Blackwood Hall, Clayton Campus,
from 4 pm, 3 June, to pay tribute to Sir Louis Matheson KBE MBE CMG,
foundation Vice-Chancellor (1960-1976) of Monash University. Sir Louis
passed away on 27 March 2002. Alumni interested in attending the

2.5 LECTURE, SENATOR ADEN RIDGEWAY ON MABO

The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law's Second Annual Public Lecture
presents Senator Aden Ridgeway on 'Mabo Ten Years On: Small Step or
Giant Leap?', 12.30 pm, June 3. At Queen's Hall, Parliament House,
Spring Street, Melbourne. All welcome to attend this free public

2.6 INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Law's International Institute of Forensic Studies will
hold its inaugural conference examining the presentation of expert
opinion evidence at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy, in July.
The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for legal and other
professionals who give evidence in courts and tribunals and to explore
and develop better ways of utilizing expertise. For more information,

2.7 LONDON ALUMNI EVENT

The Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University will host a

2.8 MONASH GOVERNANCE RESEARCH UNIT LAUNCH/LECTURE

The Monash Governance Research Unit (MGRU) has been established to
promote research on the interconnection, interdependence and interaction
among three major spheres of governance: Corporate Governance, Public
Governance, and Civil Society. The Inaugural MGRU Lecture and formal
launch of the unit will be conducted from 6.30 pm, 16 July, at
Parliament House, Melbourne, with guest speaker David Knott and MC Ken
Coghill.

Dress: Black tie
Bookings: Tables of 10 are available for group bookings. Individual
bookings are welcome.

2.9 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI CONVENTION (AUIAC)

2.10 2003 INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences has rescheduled
its international medical conference, 'The New World of Medicine', to
run from 6 to 10 May 2003 at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy. For

3.1 'FALCON' WINS NATIONAL SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY AWARD

Dr Edwin van Leeuwen (BSc(Hons) 1977, PhD Sci 1981) has been awarded a
2002 Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award for leading the
team responsible for the most significant development in mineral
exploration technology in 50 years, according to the awards committee.
The mineral technology team at BHP Billiton developed 'Falcon', a
practical airborne gravity system for mapping mineral and hydrocarbon

3.2 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ALUMNUS A CLEAR WINNER

Monash IT graduate Dr Tao Chen has won a national award for the best PhD
in computer science in Australia for his research on digitally enhancing
video images. Dr Chen, a graduate of the School of Computer
Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), won the Australian Computer
Science Association's annual award jointly with a student from Macquarie

3.3 USE OF MONASH MALAYSIA LIBRARY FACILITIES EXTENDED TO ALUMNI

Monash University Malaysia welcomes Monash graduates to use the library
facilities of the Tun Hussein Onn Library (THOL). The THOL was
established in 1987 and has over 60,000 items, including books, tapes,
microfiches and CD-ROMs. Note: Library borrowing is not available at

3.4 INDUSTRIAL DESIGN GRADUATE WINS NATIONAL DESIGN AWARD FOR 'GOLDIE'

A Monash University industrial design graduate has scooped the gold
medal at the recent Dyson Awards, the inaugural student category of the
prestigious annual Australian Design Awards. Paul Manczak, 22, won the
$7000 first prize for his Goldie lightweight rescue craft, a hand-held,
surf rescue vehicle, also described as a "motorised boogie board". The
craft is powered by an electric motor and can break through surf to
reach a swimmer in trouble. For more information, see

3.5 COMP SCI AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING GRADUATES - INFORMATION SERVICE

The School of Computer Science and Software Engineering provides contact
information for alumni who have majored in computing degrees in the
school and also in degrees offered by the former departments that made
up the school, namely Computer Science, Digital Systems, Software

3.6 2002 CIVIL ENGINEERING ALUMNUS AWARD - DOWNLOAD NOMINATION FORM

The award of 'Monash Civil Engineering Alumnus 2002' will be made to a
Monash University Civil Engineering graduate or diplomate who has made a
significant contribution to professional and community activity. The

5.2 NEW FORENSIC ACCOUNTING DEGREE COURSE BEGINS IN JULY

Monash University is set to launch Australia's first postgraduate degree
in forensic accounting. The Graduate Certificate in Forensic Studies has
been developed by the Monash Law School in conjunction with the
Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the
Australian Advocacy Institute. The degree has been developed for
accountants who may be called upon to give expert evidence in the
courts, or who wish to move into the field of forensic accounting. For

6.1 MONASH UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA SCHOLARSHIPS

Monash University Malaysia (MUM) is proud to offer two scholarships (one
per semester) to Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia
currently enrolled in an undergraduate course at an Australian
university. Scholarship holders will have their travel costs to and from
Malaysia, accommodation, MUM Library fee, equipment, laboratory and
materials fees, Students Council subscription, administrative fees and
