2014 Distinguished Alumni Award – Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Adjunct Associate Professor Stephen Marty (BPharm 1970) is a Monash volunteer and supporter who worked in community pharmacy in Melbourne for more than 30 years.

He is the current Chair of the Victorian College of Pharmacy foundation as well as Registrar of the Victorian Pharmacy Authority. In August 2009 he was appointed the Inaugural Chair of the Pharmacy Board of Australia and he continues his involvement to this day as a member of the board.

Associate Professor Marty graduated in 1969 from the then Victorian College of Pharmacy (now Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences) and practised in community pharmacy until 1992.

In 1989 he commenced part-time with the Pharmacy Board of Victoria as the first Board Education Pharmacist in Australia where he developed competency-based assessment for registration.

In 1992 he was appointed to full time positions as the Deputy Registrar of the Board and Deputy Branch Director of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Victorian Branch) then Registrar of the Board in 1998.

He currently holds the following positions:

• Member of the AHPRA Workforce Reform Committee
• Chair of the AHPRA Prescribing Working Group
• Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia
• Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors
• Member of the AHPRA Governance and Risk Committee
• Member of the Pharmacy Professional Development Forum
• Member of the Scheduled Medicines Advisory Committees of the Optometry, Podiatry and Chinese Medicine Boards of Australia
• Member of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Stakeholder Advisory Group
• Member of the Guild Insurance Pharmacy Risk Management Advisory Committee
• Fellow of the Australian College of Pharmacy

Across his career he has also been a member of a number of patient safety organisations, and member of government pharmaceutical packaging and labelling working parties and advisory panels. He was a member of the National Prescribing Service Prescribing Competencies Advisory Panel and the Health Workforce Australia Health Professionals Prescribing Pathways Project.

Associate Professor Marty holds an Adjunct Associate Professor appointment in the Monash University Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and lectures to first and third years and the Intern Training Program on the subject of pharmacy law in practise.
