Distinguished Alumni Award 2015 - Faculty of Education

Mr Derek Scott has been the Principal of Haileybury for eight years.  Haileybury has more than 3650 students on its three Melbourne campuses at Keysborough, Brighton and Berwick.

Mr Scott recently announced that the School will be opening Haileybury City, a campus for 800 students in Melbourne’s CBD in January 2016.

Mr Scott was educated in Australia and New Zealand and has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland, a Graduate Diploma of Education from Monash University and a Master of Education Management from the University of Melbourne.

His first career was as a journalist for the New Zealand Herald which he combined with playing first class cricket for Auckland.  After travelling widely and spending time training horses he entered the teaching profession in his late twenties.

He has been extensively involved in curriculum development and has had books published on the issues of globalisation, international studies and global terrorism.

He joined Haileybury in 2002, was Head of Senior School between 2005 and 2007, and was appointed Principal in December 2007.

Mr Scott has overseen the growth of Haileybury’s involvement in China which now includes the delivery of the VCE with seven partner schools and, in a first for Australian education, the opening of Haileybury Wuqing, a boarding school for Chinese students just out of Beijing.  Haileybury also delivers the VCE in Timor Leste.
