Ms Karen Wood graduated from Monash University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) having previously completed a Bachelor of Education at the State College of Victoria at Melbourne.

In August 2014 she retired from her executive role at BHP Billiton but remains an advisor to the Chief Executive. She joined BHP in 2001 as Group Company Secretary at the time of the merger between BHP Limited and Billiton Plc. She joined the Company’s senior executive group in 2006 and served on the Group Management Committee until her retirement.

In 2007 she was appointed Chief People Officer and oversaw the global Human Resources function for the Company. In 2010 she added responsibility for Corporate Affairs.

Ms Wood taught in the Law Faculty at Monash University from 1993 to 1996. Before joining BHP she was General Counsel and Company Secretary of Bonlac Foods Limited.

She served on the Takeovers Panel from 2000 to 2012, was a member of the Federal Government’s Business Regulatory Advisory Group from 2005 to 2007 and a member of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Business Consultative Panel from 2006 to 2008.

Ms Wood served on the JD Advisory Board at the University of Melbourne from 2002 to 2005.

She is currently a member of the Committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club and of Chief Executive Women.
