Mr Patrick Loftus-Hills is a Partner and Managing Director at Moelis & Company, an investment bank, based in New York. Mr Loftus-Hills graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws degree in 1991.
Mr Loftus-Hills has had three careers, all metals and mining related: first as an Industrial Chemist working with BHP Billiton at its Cadjebut Mine in Western Australia; as a lawyer with Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst) and with BHP Billiton as senior legal counsel; and then in banking where, over the past 17 years, he has worked with Macquarie Bank in Australia, UBS in Australia, New York and Hong Kong and with Moelis & Company in New York. Mr Loftus-Hills heads the Metals and Mining Group at Moelis. At UBS where he spent 11 years, Mr Loftus-Hills headed the Asian Industrials Group and their global metals and mining sector team.
Mr Loftus-Hills advises major mining companies on mergers and acquisitions and capital raisings. He has advised almost all of the world’s major mining companies involving transformational cross border transactions. He advised BHP on its merger with Billiton to form BHP Billiton, he defended WMC Resources from takeover by Xstrata and its subsequent sale to BHP Billiton, Alcan on its defence from takeover by Alcoa and subsequent sale to Rio Tinto and Vale of Brazil on their acquisition of Inco of Canada.
He has been involved in a significant number of investments by international companies into the Australian mining industry over the past 20 years. His work has also seen him IPO and raise money for companies on stock exchanges in Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the UK, and the US. He has been involved in over 120 capital raisings, restructurings and mergers and acquisitions involving assets in at least 67 countries.
Mr Loftus-Hills is currently a member of the US Leadership Council of Monash University, a Director of The Australian Chamber Orchestra in the United States, a convenor of the New York chapter of the Xavier College Australia Alumni, and a former Director and Current Member and Mission Participant of Operation Rainbow Australia, a medical charity conducting craniofacial surgery on children in Developing Countries.
Mr Loftus-Hills also regularly appears on CNBC, at global mining conferences and is quoted widely by commentators in the metals and mining field including the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.
He is married and he and his husband currently live in New York City.
