Alumnae 'make it happen' on International Women's Day
On 8 March every year women from all walks of life are celebrated for their achievements as part of International Women’s Day (IWD).
Thousands of events are held across the globe around this time to recognise the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
Monash University is a proud supporter of International Women’s Day (IWD) and this year’s theme ‘make it happen’ encouraged effective action for advancing and recognising women.
Each year Monash University hosts events as part of IWD to celebrate the achievements of women and inspire them to pursue their career aspirations.
Monash alumnae Dr Ranjana Srivastava and Ms Rebecca Dee-Bradbury were guest speakers at this year’s events at Caulfield and Clayton.
Dr Srivastava (MBBS (Hons) 1997) is a medical oncologist, general physician, educator, award-winning author and a columnist for The Guardian newspaper.
She spoke about her career journey including her training and volunteering experiences at organisations such as the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne and Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta and on the ground in the Maldives in the aftermath of the 2005 tsunami, which have led her to focus on bridging disparities in health care.
She also touched on the moral and ethical challenges of modern medicine including communication between patients and health-care providers and access to end of life care.
Ms Dee-Bradbury (BBus(Mktg) 1993) is one of Australia’s top female chief executives having held senior regional executive and CEO roles across Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific.
She has extensive experience in consumer and retail marketing, brand management and product innovation gained with international organisations such as Kraft/Cadbury, Maxxium and Lion Nathan/Pepsi Cola Bottlers.
She discussed her approach to management which focuses on leading by example and bringing people together rather than what she describes as “cut throat management”.
In the spirit of International Women’s Day the University congratulates all its female alumni on their achievements in particular those added to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women, the Australian Businesswomen's Network Hall of Fame and those who have received Monash Distinguished Alumni Awards, Australian Honours, Fellowships as well as Honorary doctorates.
