Education Matters
The third annual celebration of outstanding learning, teaching and research-led education "Education Matters" was held from Monday 6 September through to Friday 17 September, 2010.
This year's program centred around the theme of visionary education, with 20 events held during these two weeks.
A highlight of these two weeks was the public event: 'Visionary Education: Ethics, Sustainability and Inspiration' with the keynote address by Professor Julian Savulescu, Uehiro Chair in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford and Monash alumnus.
Art from Africa Auction
More than $25,000 was raised for the Monash University Fund for Education in South Africa (MUFESA) after a successful auction of African art at the Caulfield campus on 15 September, 2010.
The artwork was created by students, volunteers and Saturday School students at the campus in South Africa and by local artists and communities around Johannesburg.
The Epiphany And The Periphery exhibition featured more than 50 artworks and almost all were sold. The highest bid was $6,200 and many others were sold for significant amounts.
One of the key organisers of the event was William Moore, 2010 distinguished student alumni recipient and honours student.
Initially in South Africa on inter-campus exchange, he is now completing his honours as an MSA student. He has been instrumental in growing the reach of the Monash Saturday School for disadvantaged students from the nearby Zandspruit settlement.
Mental Health Week
Mental Health Week aimed to activate, educate and engage Monash staff and students and promote mental health and wellbeing through a great variety of events and was held from 11 to 15 October.
Various guest speakers were on campus and a forum for Mental Health First Aiders was also held.
MUMA's relocation to Caulfield Campus
Located at the heart of Monash's Art & Design precinct, the new museum encompasses a suite of dynamic gallery spaces; an expansive landscaped sculpture court; a major sculptural commission by artist Callum Morton; and a series of distinctive threshold spaces, including the canopy, spine, light-well and boiler room.
Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, the flexible form of MUMA's new architectural design provides increased gallery space and the capacity for MUMA to present an expanded program of exhibitions, special projects, education and public programs, alongside exhibitions from the Monash University Collection.
The Faculty of Arts Office
Staff in the Faculty of Arts Office were pleased to make the move from Building B, Level 4, to Building H, Level 5. All contact details for staff within the Faculty of Arts office remain the same.
End of Uni-wide 10,000 Steps Event
A celebration to mark the end of this year's 10,000 steps event was held at Clayton campus on Wednesday 17 November. Layne Beachley, 7 time Surfing World Champion was the guest speaker for the event.
Pleased to advise that a team from the Caulfield Campus "The Great Walkers" shared the prize as the first team to complete the challenge. Over 2,000 participants across the university, including staff, family and friends participated in this year's event.
Vice-Chancellor's Visit
On the 6th December, Caulfield Campus hosted the Vice-Chancellor on the last of this three visits in 2010. The Vice-Chancellor updated staff on the changes at the University in 2010 and set the scene for the University going forward in 2011.
