Welcome from the Dean
Welcome from the Dean
Monash University’s Faculty of Education is one of the world’s leading Faculties of Education, standing proudly in the city of Melbourne’s south-east and genuinely leading change nationally and globally. As Dean, it is my honour to welcome you to Monash Education!
In terms of rankings, we have a stellar reputation for excellence in research and teaching, ranked number one in Australia and always top 20 in the world. But our passion is for more than rankings, as important an indicator as they are when you are making choices. Our passion is for impact - making a positive difference in the lives of others, through education and through counselling and psychology. We share this passion with our vibrant alumni community, with research partners as well as with stakeholders in the professions and society more generally.
Post-pandemic, we are still a large, multi-campus Faculty with almost 6000 students (and rising!), 180 academic staff and 90 professional staff. We offer a diverse range of disciplines in our taught and research degree programmes and, from 2025, in our undergraduate provision, we will offer Australia’s first and only Bachelor of Learning Design and Technology alongside our highly regarded Bachelor of Education. Since long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Faculty of Education has offered high quality online learning opportunities and we continue to build on our expertise in this area, offering exceptional support for our own students’ learning as well as for primary and secondary school students – regionally as well as internationally - through our ground-breaking Virtual School.
Given our scale, we are also a highly experienced provider of customised professional learning and immersion programmes and the delivery of complex, capability-building initiatives for teachers, school leaders, psychologists and other professionals, working with governments and other agencies and organisations across Australia and around the world.
Research is right at the heart of what we do, as you would expect of a Faculty within a leading global research university. Our Faculty of Education has a truly vibrant and diverse research culture that, in 2024, will be enhanced by the opening of a new Faculty Research Centre in Early Childhood Education that builds on the research program of Laureate Professor Marilyn Fleer. We are probably unique amongst Monash’s Faculties in having strengths in each of the University’s Strategic Plan (Impact 2030 ) Challenges of the Age: Thriving Communities, Climate Change, and Geopolitical Security. All of our students as well as society more generally benefit from our research – whether through our education programmes, our translational work, or broader stakeholder engagement. Globally, our alliance with other universities allows us both to accelerate and extend our impact and to learn from our international partners.
It is an honour to serve as Dean of this Faculty and to work with such an outstanding team of talented academic and professional colleagues. A lot has changed in the Faculty over the last four years – from a new structure with new organisational units such as our unique Krongold Clinic; the extension of our areas of international expertise and research strength; new degrees and short courses; significant international partnerships and contracts; above all, a new ambition for the quality and impact of our research and education programmes.
We know our reach is global but we are equally certain that we must offer outstanding study and work experiences for our students, visitors and staff here on the ground in Melbourne. Monash believes that there’s never been a time or a greater need to make change in the world. Whether you want to change your life, your career, your community, or the future, it starts at the Monash Faculty of Education. Join us!
