  • Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Education (Secondary)

Choosing a degree in his final year of school was an easy task for Hayden. Living on the Mornington Peninsula, he considered Monash University Peninsula campus his “local” university. When he learned Peninsula Campus offered a double degree in Sports and Outdoor Education alongside Education, Hayden’s mind was made up.

Hayden took on a number of extracurricular activities during his time at university. He enjoyed the camps that the university offered and became President of the Outdoor Recreation social club, where he led a number of events.

Professional placements were fundamental to Hayden learning the skills he required to become a teacher. He attended placements every semester, which gave him insight into how the education system runs and prepared him for life after university.

“Placement mentors were a great influence on my development as an educator and have shaped the way I approach my teaching to this day,” Hayden says.

Hayden currently works as a physical education teacher at a Language School in south-east Melbourne. Students at the school are made up of newly arrived migrants and refugees who must complete English language studies before entering mainstream schooling. Hayden’s work has an emphasis on teaching students about the language surrounding physical education, while also focusing on physical, social, emotional and communication skills.

This year [2017], Hayden has taken on the role of Level Coordinator. Part of this role involves working to resolve behavioural and wellbeing issues across his level. Hayden is enjoying contending with the challenges the role brings and developing his skills in new areas.

The relationships that Hayden formed while studying at Monash have greatly influenced the teacher that he is today. His lecturers and tutors made themselves available to him even after completing his degree at Monash.

“[These] relationships have been valuable in continuing to develop as an educator post- university,” Hayden says.

Hayden’s openness to continue developing his skills help him achieve success. We look forward to seeing what he does next!
