English language requirements for Bachelor of Education (Honours)

To be considered for the Bachelor of Education (Honours) or for the Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood (off-shore course, Singapore), applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements. Applicants may do this by providing evidence of one of the qualifications or English language proficiency tests listed below.

The minimum English language requirement is achieved if the applicant has met one of the following conditions:

Qualification level Applicant's secondary schooling entirely in an English medium educational institution Applicant's secondary schooling not entirely in an English medium educational institution

Secondary schooling or equivalent

Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent with:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL): Minimum score of 30
  • Units 3 and 4 in any other English subject: Minimum score of 25
  • An equivalent result for an equivalent English subject.

Tertiary and post-secondary studies

Having studied at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution evidenced by a letter or transcript from the institution, applicants must have satisfactory completed one year, full-time study (two standard full-time semesters) of one of the following:

  • undergraduate or postgraduate study
  • a TAFE or VET diploma
  • a program assessed as being equivalent to Monash University undergraduate study.
  • an Australian VET certificate IV course that has been approved as requiring sufficient English skills.

Having studied at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution evidenced by a letter or transcript from the institution applicants must have satisfactory completed one year, full-time study (two standard full-time semesters) of one of the following:

  • undergraduate or postgraduate study
  • a TAFE or VET diploma
  • a program assessed as being equivalent to Monash University undergraduate study.

Two single units at tertiary level

Having studied at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution evidenced by a letter or transcript from the institution with,

  • satisfactory completion of two units - one of which is English-rich (at least half the assessment tasks require high use of English such as essays, reports, presentations rather than maths, formulas or programming languages).

Not applicable

English Language Proficiency Test

Not applicable

Satisfactorily completed one of the English Language Proficiency Tests, achieving the minimum overall score and minimum band/component scores.

Monash English Bridging Program

Not applicable

Successfully completed Monash English Bridging Program at the Monash University English Language Centre.

English Language Proficiency Test

Where an applicant’s secondary schooling is not entirely in English, a measure of English proficiency, such as an English language proficiency test, may be considered, provided it has been completed within two years prior of the date the applicant will commence the course they have applied for. Applications must include one original test report meeting the minimum results listed below:

Monash English Bridging Program

Where an applicant’s secondary schooling is not entirely in English, Monash English Bridging program may be considered.

Upon satisfactory completion of a 10 week or 15 week Monash English Bridging program, applicants may enter directly into the Bachelor of Education (Honours) course, provided they have also met academic entry requirements.

IELTS entry requirements for the 10-week Monash English Bridging Program are:

Overall: 5.5
Writing: 6.0
No band lower than 5

IELTS entry requirements for the 15 week Monash English Bridging Program are:

Overall: 5.5
Writing: 5.0
No band lower than 5
