Engaging Babies and Toddlers Through Everyday Activities

Course overview

This course will assist you to gain expertise in infants and toddlers’ learning and development and will explore contemporary theories of early childhood, with emphasis on young children’s emotional and cognitive development to support you to engage young children in playful  daily activities.

You will develop your skills to identify many small significant events that usually occur unnoticed in the daily life experiences  of infants. It will also demonstrate how you can effectively and sensitively  communicate with babies, and create teachable moments to develop intentional  teaching.

Topics covered

  • Daily transitions in infancy:
    How to support babies' transition to different daily events and make them feel safe, welcome and belonging to the centre.
  • Embodiment of babies' experience:
    Communication with babies and how to support their engagement in the playful daily experience.
  • Babies' play and wellbeing in a diverse culture:
    Explore   and analyse the examples of different cultural activities to support   babies' play and wellbeing, which enable you to work with diverse   cultural families.
  • Feedback for families:
    Developing   ways to share knowledge of well-being, learning and development of   babies' daily life in care, and build reflective practices with   families.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. It is designed for all staff working in the field of early childhood education and care and anyone interested in the education of young children (babies and toddlers).

Assessment

Class participation. The presenter will identify a variety of practical tasks during the course.

This course is closely linked to the Quality Areas of the National Quality Framework (NQF).

Recognition

You will be issued with a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Education, Monash University.
