Our students are job ready when they graduate.
At Monash, you get real-life experience right from the start of your course - in semester one. But don’t worry, we guide you and ensure you are adequately prepared before your first round of professional experience. Initially you might be observing and listening and getting used to a classroom. By your final semester you will be taking classes and planning lessons.
We have dramatically changed the professional experience structure at Monash. Instead of the traditional model of one mentor teacher, we offer different scenarios, and environments such as team teaching to expose you to different teaching approaches. Students also have the opportunity to pursue teaching experiences overseas, in local schools, rural communities and remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.
We currently have arrangements with the following countries (and counting) that our students can travel to and undertake professional experience:
- Cook Islands
- South Africa
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Our International Professional Experience (IPE) means you can embed yourself in another culture and country and experience teaching. Our students learn new teaching styles and methods, expose themselves to new environments and allow themselves to become global educators. You can do more than one placement overseas, and you also get the opportunity to explore your surroundings and travel in your free time.
"It has been such a privilege to have taught in South Africa. Being immersed into an entirely different cultural context has reinforced the fact that education is key to empowering individuals."
Graduate, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education (Secondary), 2013
Teaching doesn't just occur in traditional classroom environments, so we also offer professional experience through programs and partnerships with Museum Victoria, Drama Victoria, Monash Hospital, Scouts Victoria and the Keep on Learning program.
We have a dedicated professional experience team that will source your placements for you. Our strong list of partner schools and networks ensure we are well connected to help you gain the most diverse experience during your course.
"In first year, I did my fieldwork with an amazing early literacy coordinator from whom I learned much – I will never forget her wealth of knowledge, love of her job, and mentorship. This was a great way to ease into the course and learn outside the classroom."
