Monash Education Research Community

Monash Education Research Community (MERC) is a friendly peer support community for research students in the Faculty of Education.

"The Faculty recognises and values the unique role MERC plays in supporting our HDR students and we are proud of the contribution it makes to our research community."

Professor John Loughran, The Dean

As a community, we run academic and social events, as well as informal gatherings where research students can discuss their research ideas with their peers. Members enjoy opportunities to forster relationships with other researchers.

MERC started in 1992 (initially as the Education Research Collective of Students and Staff, ERCSS). It is run by a committee of student volunteers, Convenors, who are norminated each year.

MERC student representatives formally advocate on behalf of the research students at the faculty's Research Committee and Research Degrees Committee.

While membership is optional, we highly recommend it for all new research students to join (including students enrolled in Honours, Masters by research and PhD programs).

"The Faculty of Education has a vibrant research culture supported by our own academics and visiting scholars, and very importantly, by our diverse community of research students. We recognise the value our students bring in fostering our research strengths, and are pleased that through MERC, they have the worthy support of their peers in their educational journey.

The supportive network and friendly community engendered by MERC helps to ensure that our students' experience is positive and fulfilling both academically and personally."

Associate Professor Joanne Deppeler
