Materials Science and Engineering safety procedures
Safety in Materials Engineering is of the utmost importance and a legislative requirement as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. Before any research or experimental procedures are undertaken, Project Summary's, Risk Assessments (RA's), Safe Work Instructions (SWI's) and full training must be completed to ensure a safe work environment is provided for all students, researchers and staff.

Risk Management (SWI & RA)
To reduce the risks to health and safety, we must identify the hazards and controls in a task or process and assess the risk to see if we need further controls.
Risk assessment is important for any task or activity involving dangerous goods, machinery or equipment where there is a risk of harm, and when developing safe work instructions.

This checklist is to be completed by all staff, students, visitors upon entering a laboratory to undertake training and work. Laboratory induction must be contextualised to suit the work area and must be delivered by the lab supervisor/manager or appropriate delegate. Completed original copy to be kept by Materials Reception. A copy to be kept by lab supervisor/manager.
The Department is legally required to keep records of all OHS training for equipment/processes in the workplace. The record must be held by the Department for up to 40 years - this is certainly the case for processes involving known or suspected carcinogens. As the OHS laws currently stand in Australia, electronic signatures are not considered legal and therefore a signed paper copy of the training records must be kept by the Department. Staff, students, visitors of the Department will therefore be assigned their own, individual training record which will be kept in Materials Reception at all times.
When a person is trained on a piece of equipment or a process (for example, a process can be a multi-step procedure for making nanoparticles or a polymer), and has carried out the appropriate RA and SWI, BOTH the trainee and trainer must sign the training record. Just signing the RA and SWI is not sufficient, as these documents show that the person has identified the hazards, risks and safe working procedures, but does not (legally) show that appropriate training has taken place.
