Becoming an adviser

The role of adviser

Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Advisers provide information and support to students and staff who believe that they may have experienced harassment or discrimination or who believe that such an allegation may be made against them.

Advisers must be able to:

  • listen seriously and impartially to the concerns and perceptions of students or staff seeking their advice;
  • explain the relevant University policies and procedures;
  • explore possible options for resolving the problem;
  • make referrals to other sources of help, and
  • provide support while the matter is being resolved.

Advisers are appointed to this role by the relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellor under the University's Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Procedures.

Students and staff interested in appointment to the role must complete the requisite training.

Training for the role of adviser

There are three components to adviser training:

  1. EO online training;
  2. Face-to-face half-day workshop on equal opportunity rights and responsibilities, and
  3. 2-day Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Adviser training.
