OzViz 2009 Workshop - 3 & 4 December 2009The Monash e-Research Centre was proud to host the recent OzViz 2009 Workshop which showcased the latest in visualisation tools and techniques for scientists. The presentations included; biological visualisation, volume rendering, 3D construction, image processing, scene reconstruction, GPU rendering and immersive visualisation. 'OzViz' was originally established by the Australian National University’s, Vizlab, and is the premier event in Australia for visualisation practitioners. In his keynote address Professor Rob Lewis, foundation chair of X-ray and Synchrotron Physics at Monash University (and Director of the Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science), presented a vision of the 'future' of medical imaging techniques in which experimental data could be transformed into sophisticated visual simulations, which could then be manipulated to such an extent as to enable entirely new insights in research. The audience was comprised of researchers from earth sciences, life sciences, astronomy, neuroimaging, urban modelling, mathematics and computer science. Organiser of the event, Dr Wojtek Goscinski, said “The new generation imaging instruments are set to produce huge volumes of high resolution data in three or more dimensions. Likewise, sophisticated simulation software is already generating vast amounts of data. Good visualisation tools and practises are essential to interrogate, validate and communicate this data.” An immediate challenge for Monash researchers is how to best utilise data produced by science facilities within the Clayton Innovation Precinct, such as experimental data from the new Imaging and Medical Therapies Beamline at the Australian Synchrotron. Participants of the workshop were also informed about the ‘Multi-modal Australian ScienceS Imaging and Visualisation Environment’ (MASSIVE) - a new visualisation facility being developed by the Australian Synchrotron, CSIRO, Monash University and the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) and also being funded by the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI).
