Library Encumbrance

The Monash University library system levies fines for the late or non return of library items. For details of library fines please refer to Library fines.

If payment of the library fine is not made by the due date, then the library may activate an encumbrance upon the student's record.

This Encumbrance Will Stop

  • access to Monash University's computer system
  • access to enrolment records, examination results and academic transcripts
  • graduation

To Lift an Encumbrance

  1. The student must pay the outstanding amount owing to the library.
  2. The library notifies the Fees Section to remove the encumbrance.
  3. When notification is received and payment confirmed by the library, it will take approximately forty-eight hours (during the working week) for a student's computer access to be reinstated. Please note that payments made on a Friday afternoon, via the phone or internet banking systems will not be received by the University until the following Monday. This will delay restoration of access to services.
