Refund Eligibility

Students may be entitled to a refund due to

  • overpaying tuition fees
  • discontinuing units before the census date
  • withdrawing or intermitting from the course before the census date
  • being entitled to a discount on tuition fees

Any student discontinuing a course or unit enrolment after the census date is liable for the fees in full.

No refund is available for application fees, administrative fines or service fees levied by Student Administration.

Credit in a students account will be applied to any other debts held by the student before a refund is issued. This may result in no refund being available. Other debts may include halls of residence, library and a student loan.

Refunds for International Students

Under the National Code 2007, international students holding a student visa are required to enrol so they complete their course within the duration specified in their electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Form (CoE). Unless an Underload is approved, this generally requires that students maintain a full-time enrolment load for the duration of the course. Refund requests from international students must be authorised by the Manager, Fees Monash University, or their nominee.

To be eligible for a refund (less applicable administrative charges), an international student must withdraw from a course within the first four teaching weeks (or four weeks of a research program). See the following website for details on the refund policy for international students.

Note: where fees are paid by a party on behalf of the student, the University/Monash College reserves the right to notify that party.

Refunds for Domestic Students

Full-fee or Student Contribution Amount upfront Domestic students who have made a tuition payment direct to the University are entitled to a full refund if they withdraw from a unit prior to the unit census date.

After the census date, students who have made a tuition payment direct to the University may seek remission of that debt from the faculty, if they have suffered trauma/sickness which has prevented further study. Applications, with full supporting documentation, should be made in writing to the faculty.
HECS HELP Domestic students who have obtained a HECS-HELP loan for the Student Contribution Amount (SCA) will have no SCA liability for a unit if they withdraw from that unit prior to the unit census date.

After the census date, students who have a HECS-HELP debt may seek remission of that debt.

Research students Students undertaking a research component in the current year may apply for a refund if the candidature is withdrawn, a thesis is submitted or a change from full time to part time study occurs before the census date. The enrolment load undertaken at the time of withdrawal will determine the refund amount.
