Material transfer agreements

Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) are contracts that allow the sharing of research materials between two organisations. The recipient can then use these materials for research purposes.

The MTA clearly outlines the rights of the provider and the recipient in regard to the materials. MTAs can also cover the transportation of materials to or from the University.

MTAs are applied to materials such as:

  • Biological materials (reagents, cell lines, plasmids and vectors)
  • Chemical compounds
  • Other physical materials

The Industry Engagement and Commercialisation Group is responsible for arranging MTAs on behalf of Monash. If you are a researcher and need an MTA please email

Individual researchers are not authorised to sign these agreements on behalf of the University. A list of staff who can sign agreements on behalf of Monash is available.
