The Provision of Assistance to Build Research Capacity in the Vietnam Centre for Human Rights Research – Ho Chi Minh National Political AcademyLocation: Viet Nam Monash International Projects is delivering this project in conjunction with the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, Faculty of Law, Monash University under the Capacity Building for Effective Governance (CEG) program. The aim of the project is to enhance the capacity of the Government of Viet Nam to incorporate the norms of international human rights law into domestic policy and legislation, by increasing the research and teaching capacity of the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy on international human rights law. The project involves technical assistance in the form of advice on curriculum development, research development, and assistance in the training of teachers in the use of the teaching materials. Alternative Dispute Resolution TrainingLocation: Jakarta, Indonesia As part of AusAID's Legal Reform Program Facility, Monash International Projects worked with the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia to design and pilot an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) training program. The program aimed to build the capacity of ADR practitioners (current and prospective) in negotiation and mediation skills, strategies and techniques, and to assist the Faculty to promote ADR as an alternative to judicial processes in the following areas: (i) land disputes, (ii) environmental disputes, (iii) labour disputes, (iv) family law and (v) commercial disputes. Indonesia Human Rights Training in Australia (4 deliveries)Location: Australia Myanmar Australia Human Rights Initiative (Phase II)Location: Myanmar Building on the foundations established during the first phase (2000-2002), Phase II of the Human Rights Initiative will contribute to improvements in the protection and promotion of human rights within the broad context of promoting the process of democratisation and development in Myanmar. The focus of the program is on extending the scope, content and reach of human rights knowledge and activity in Myanmar through capacity building and institutional strengthening. The program’s activities include workshops, exchanges, visits by human rights experts and collaboration on policy and program development in agreed areas. Convention on the Rights of the Child Training WorkshopsLocation: Burma This project responded to the Burmese Government's request for assistance to increase understanding and awareness of the UN Convention on Rights of the Child for state/division Committees on the Rights of the Child and key Department of Social Welfare (DSW) staff. The workshops were designed and delivered by the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law and Monash International Projects. Myanmar - Human Rights and Responsibilities WorkshopsLocation: Mandalay and Rangooon, Myanmar Between July 2000 and August 2002, Monash International Projects and Castan Centre for Human Rights Law delivered Training Workshops in Human Rights in Myanmar. In 2000 AusAID sponsored three workshops in Rangoon under a new human rights training project with the Government of Myanmar. The 2001 series was coordinated by the Myanmar Human Rights Committee on behalf of the Myanmar Government. It consisted of four workshops, each of four days duration with twenty five participants. The objective of the program was to promote understanding of human rights issues and the adoption and implementation of practical changes in relevant official procedures, processes and systems. Human Rights Program ReviewLocation: Jakarta, Indonesia As part of AusAID's Legal Reform Program Facility, Monash International Projects managed a human rights program review aimed at assisting the Directorate General Human Rights (DGHR) in the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights to identify specific priority human rights policy issues and to develop project plans to deal with those issues. Human Rights Training for the Iraqi MinistryLocation: Australia Five officials of Iraq’s newly formed Ministry of Human Rights undertook three weeks training in Australia on international human rights under the Rehabilitation Assistance for Iraq program (RAFI). The course was delivered in conjunction with Monash’s Castan Centre for Human Rights Law and covered topics including civil and political rights, women’s and children’s rights, the UN human rights system, race and the rights of minorities and the Australian legal system. The course included numerous site visits including field trips to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) in Sydney and the Australian Electoral Commission in Canberra, where the participants observed the 2004 federal election. |
