World-class researchSolutions for the 21st Century
Avian influenza -- International security -- Salinity -- Global warming -- Racial tension ... These are some of the primary issues we confront in the 21st Century. These are also areas in which Monash is internationally distinguished by its research strength; its strong network of linkages; business sector collaboration; and by delivery of relevant solutions. In an age of increasingly complex problems, there is an unprecedented need for integrated solutions. Isolated research groups cannot harness the breadth of expertise required to deliver solutions to sophisticated problems. Monash will drive collaborative projects between experts from a range of fields to deliver practical, high-impact solutions to some of the key problems emerging in the world today. Monash has made a clear commitment to build on its already substantial research achievements. The commissioning of the Australian Synchrotron at our Clayton Campus together with the recent recruitment of a number of outstanding international researchers will help make Monash University one of the world's finest research universities. Successful commercialisation projects highlight the impact Monash research has across the world. Notable projects such as pioneering IVF, designing a drug to fight a potential flu pandemic and research that underpins the latest road safety initiatives and have had a 20% reduction in deaths on Victorian roads demonstrate the potential of the University's unique ability to engage with the world. The University will use its research expertise, its multi-campus structure and its international reach to address these key areas of research priority for the 21st Century: Sustainability -- Monash will improve business, community and environmental sustainability through excellence in collaborative research in the fields of water, climate, energy and transport Peace and security -- the University will play a significant role in searching not just for new insights into peace and conflict, but also facilitating interfaith and intercultural understanding Economic development -- researchers will deliver a greater understanding of development, economic regulation and international capital flows -- fundamental to the wellbeing of all citizens in the 21st Century Innovation -- With a critical mass of researchers in nanoscience, drug discovery and industrial design, the University has the capacity to clearly position itself as the nation's pre-eminent centre for innovation Health and disease -- Cross-disciplinary research drawing together medical science, pharmacology, epidemiology and sociology is urgently required to deliver sophisticated solutions to complex medical issues Community cohesion -- will draw together expertise from a wide range of areas to implement research outcomes and also lead the world in identifying the drivers of effective community dynamics |
