Arriving in Australia

When you first arrive in Australia, the following are some of the things you may want to do:

  • Contact your family so they know that you have arrived safely.
  • Open a bank account.
  • Deposit any bank drafts, traveller's cheques or cash you have brought with you.
  • Finalise your permanent accommodation  (if you need help with this, contact the International Student Support unit on your campus).
  • Get to know your campus - start on this even before Orientation if you can.
  • Get to know the area near where you are going to be living - particularly for the services you will need like shops, eating places, postal services, banking and medical facilities as well as transport options.

University orientation

It is important to organise yourself to attend Orientation at your campus. Orientation is an essential part of becoming acquainted with your University lifestyle as well as the services that are available to you. The Orientation program is not only an introduction to Monash and your life in Australia, it also incorporates the compulsory Registration and Enrolment sessions for all new students.

Adjusting to life in Australia

Adjusting to life in Australia can be challenging. You may face difficulties with:

  • prolonged absence from your family and friends.
  • social and academic use of English in Australia.
  • unfamiliar styles of learning and teaching.
  • independent or shared accommodation.
  • changes in social behaviours and values.
  • differences in population density, distances, and transportation.
  • a different climate.

Helping you adjust

It is good to prepare yourself mentally, as much as you can, for the new life you are starting. Please remember that there is help available. Monash Health, Wellbeing and Development are located on all campuses. They provide free, confidential support and advice to all students on family, housing, financial, religious/spiritual, emotional, physical and psychological issues.
