Terminology used at Monash

Word Definition
Course Degree or Program eg Bachelor of Arts
Unit Subject or course eg Introductory Accounting
Unit code

Each unit has a 7 character code eg AFW1001
AFW - letters indicates discipline eg Accounting
First number indicates year level, eg 1 = first year
Units starting with a number higher than 4 are usually postgraduate units and only available to postgraduate exchanges upon special approval – there are some exceptions to this guideline for some Faculties*. The handbook lists units individually and will state if the unit is a postgraduate or undergraduate.

*Note: Faculty of Law undergraduate units begin with 1-5 and postgraduate units with 7.

Credit points Most units are worth 6 credit points (some engineering units are worth 4 credit points)
Full-time load 24 credit points per semester (usually 4 units)
Faculty All units belong to a particular faculty. Exchange students are allocated to the faculty in which they are doing the majority of their Monash units.
Prerequisites Other units which must already have been completed at home institution before this unit can be studied. These apply to exchange and study abroad students.
School Major discipline within a faculty.
Department Specific discipline within a school.
Lecture Class of 10 -- 250 students where an academic delivers a 1-2 hour lecture with little interaction.
Tutorial Class of 5 -- 25 students where an academic leads group discussion and students make individual or group presentations.
Laboratory session/workshop Class of 10 -- 100 students conducted in a laboratory.
