Orientation is your chance to get connected with your university. It’s a busy period – and do note that it’s compulsory for all commencing students. So find out what you’ll need to do before orientation starts, and familiarise yourself with what’s happening on your campus.
Getting off to a good start
The Orientation Program is compulsory for all commencing students, and it’s really important that you attend. It’s during orientation that you’ll get access to resources and support programs that are specifically designed to better equip you for your first year at Monash.
Of course, university doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Orientation is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn, and be open to new experiences. We’ll see you there!
Welcome to Monash IT
We are delighted to have you with us and to accompany you in what we know will be a rewarding and fruitful learning journey.
Information Technology is experiencing an exciting new era of rapid and very solid growth, as evidenced by strong results in many IT-based companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Spotify, Netflix, Skype, etc. This is not another "IT bubble" but the result of every major business, industry and organisation critically relying on software for its survival and growth, delivered as global online services.
Further, IT is now at the core of practically every scientific advance from molecular simulation to galaxy discovery. Society is rapidly turning digital, with software tools and internet-based services supporting and connecting the lives of billions of people, ubiquitously and instantaneously.
In Australia, ICT accounts for about 8% of the Australian Economy (GDP), and the number of ICT jobs already significantly exceeds the number of highly qualified ICT professionals.
As a future IT professional, this means you will have a wealth of exciting and varied career opportunities available, and you will operate in a rapidly evolving landscape, where technology capabilities grow exponentially and employers compete aggressively to attract and retain the best IT graduates. Further, IT provides excellent means for individuals to realise their entrepreneurial ambitions across all disciplines and professions.
Whichever Monash IT degree you have chosen to undertake, it will give you a solid foundation of knowledge and skills across all major IT disciplines. It will also equip you for continuous learning, able to adapt and respond to rapid change. During your studies, you can further specialise according to your interests, and you will learn how to develop and manage IT projects in different contexts. Further, it will help you refine your interpersonal and communications skills and, critically importantly, provide you with opportunities to obtain the necessary practical experience that will make you job-ready and a valuable asset to any employer.
While the next years will be demanding and challenging, we are here to help you achieve your dreams. Best wishes from me and from all staff at Monash IT.
