Grievance and appeal procedures for Graduate Research Students

General complaints

The Faculty of Law maintains systems and promotes practices which are designed to minimise the incidence of legitimate student grievances and to ensure that complaints by students are dealt with promptly and fairly.

Complaints about general administrative matters and those pertaining to the physical environment of the Law Building may be made to the Graduate Research Student Coordinator who will refer the complaints to the relevant Committees or Managers within the Faculty for investigation and  resolution.

If the issue cannot be resolved informally to the satisfaction of the graduate research student, their complaint may be referred to the Faculty Grievance Officer.

Please refer to Student Complaints and Grievance Procedures.

Individual academic complaints

The  Director HDR is the first point of contact for graduate research students who have a complaint about an academic matter that affects them personally - that is, the quality of supervision being provided to them.

The  Director HDR may advise the student to discuss the matter with the staff member concerned, and at the same time advise that staff member of the nature of the concern and what might be done to deal with it. Where it is not practical for a student to discuss the matter with the staff member concerned, the  Director HDR will, in the first instance, relay the grievance to the staff member concerned and attempt to deal with the complaint directly without disclosing the identity of the complainant (if non-disclosure is requested).

The Director HDR is entitled to seek confirmation of the standing of the person lodging the complaint, and will not act on wholly anonymous complaints.  If the matter remains unresolved and the student requires it to be dealt with more formally, he or she may be called upon to disclose his or her identity in the course of lodging a formal written complaint.

If the issue cannot be resolved informally to the satisfaction of the graduate research student, their grievance may be referred to the Faculty Grievance Officer.

Please refer to Student Complaints and Grievance Procedures.

Where a graduate research student wishes to lodge a complaint about  his/her supervisor and the supervisor is also the  Director HDR, the student should refer the matter directly to the Faculty Grievance Officer who will, in addition to her/his standard responsibilities, direct the grievance to the Associate Dean (Research)  in accordance with the HDR Candidature : Academic and Administrative Complaints Procedures.

The Faculty follows the University Policy on Student Academic Grievances. Please note that the Student Complaints and Grievance Procedures are made in line with the above parent policy.
