2017 Costello Lecture: Does the International Criminal Court have an impossible mission? Lessons from 15 years of the ICC.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is the world's first permanent international criminal court, building on the legacies of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals, and on the International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

An emphasis on this apparent natural progression to the ICC can obscure the unprecedented challenge to State Sovereignty that the Rome Statute represents.

Professor Tim McCormack will explain the basics of ICC jurisdiction and will attempt to expose sources of some of the controversies in which the Court is currently enmeshed.

In contemplating future prospects for the pursuit of global justice, Tim will ask whether the ICC has an impossible mandate.

Presented by: Professor Tim McCormack, Special Adviser on War Crimes to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague
