Professor Nahum Mushin recognised for a life of service to law and society

Congratulations to Adjunct Professor the Honourable Nahum Mushin AM who has been made a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

Professor Mushin was recognised as part of the Australia Day 2017 Honours "for his significant service to the judiciary, particularly to family law, to legal education, and to the welfare of children."

Prior to his appointment to the Monash Law Faculty, Professor Mushin was a Judge of the Family Court of Australia for 21 years and a Presidential Member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Professor Mushin has the distinct achievement of being the first Monash Law graduate to be appointed as a Judge.

Throughout his career, Professor Mushin has worked tirelessly to contribute to law reform across Australia in areas of matrimonial property, evidence and family violence. His work as a legal educator has focused on family law, ethics, advocacy and cultural diversity.

“I only have one word for how I feel about receiving the award – honoured. It’s very honouring to have public recognition," Professor Mushin tells J-Wire.

"I am passionate about family law, the judiciary, the rule of law and access to justice. I think all of those are absolutely fundamental to the proper conduct of a democracy.”
