1.1 Introducing the topic

"Ok, well, what I am going to be doing this afternoon is telling you a little bit about the differences I see between them in terms of their chemistry and how this helps us identify sediment source. And I'm also going to be telling you a little bit about the difference in phosphorus content between the two soils."

2.1 Developing the topic

"I'm going to begin today by taking you on a short walk through the catchment to give you a bit of a feel for the catchment, its background, how it works..."

2.2 Developing the topic further

"So let's look at the catchment."

2.3 Summarising and linking ideas

"Just to kind of recap what we have so far: we've visited my small, multiple-land-use catchment, we've looked at the land uses, and I've indicated the water quality problems. I've shown you what the distribution of sediment throughout the reservoir is, and this maybe gives us an indication of what the dominant forces might be. There's a relatively small amount of sediment within the reservoir, and of this ten percent is stored in the deltas, and about sixteen percent has been derived from the shorelines. This leaves 150,000 cubic metres that's been derived from catchment sources, and it's this material that I'll be investigating the source of in the next section of the talk."

3.1 Concluding the presentation

"...and so, the major conclusions from the work that I've done, are that the dominant source of sediment to Tarago Reservoir are the sedimentary and basalt derived soils of the catchment, whereas the dominant sources of phosphorus to Tarago Reservoir are the basalt derived soils. And that gives a very - quite clear management implication. If you want to control sediment delivery, look at the sedimentary and basalt derived soils; if you want to control phosphorus delivery, look at the basalt derived soils."
