Australia experienced rapid population growth in the years 2007-2009. The rate of growth declined after reaching its peak in 2008, and has experienced periods of increased growth and decline since that time. In the year to December 2016 the population growth at 1.6% was above the long-term average.

The preliminary estimated population was 24,385,600 at 31 December 2016, an increase of 372,800 people since 31 December 2015.

The 2016 annual growth rate at 1.6% compares with growth of 2.2% in 2008, 1.8% in 2009, 1.4% in 2010, 1.7% in 2011, 1.7% in 2012, 1.5% in 2013, 1.4% in 2014, and 1.4% in 2015.
