Australia experienced rapid population growth in the years 2007-2009. The rate of growth declined after reaching its peak in 2008, and has experienced periods of increased growth and decline since that time. In the year to September 2016 the population growth at 1.5% was marginally above the long-term average.

The preliminary estimated population was 24,220,200 at 30 September 2016, an increase of 348,700 people since 30 September 2015.

The 2016 annual growth rate at 1.5% compares with growth of 2.2% in 2008, 1.8% in 2009, 1.4% in 2010, 1.7% in 2011, 1.7% in 2012, 1.5% in 2013, 1.4% in 2014, and 1.4% in 2015.
