In 2015 Australia’s population growth fell below the long-term average of the last 50 years. After rapid growth in the years 2007-2009 there was a decline until 2011, stability in 2012-2013 followed by further decline.

The annual growth rate was estimated at 1.3% for the year ended 30 September 2015. This compares with growth of 2.2% in 2008, 1.8% in 2009, 1.4% in 2010, 1.6% in 2011, 1.8% in 2012, 1.6% in 2013, and 1.4% in 2014.

The preliminary estimated population at 30 September 2015 was 23,860,100, an increase of 313,200 people since 30 September 2014.
