Ying Xin Pao

Bachelor of Nutrition Science

A lifelong love of food inspired Ying Xin Pao to study nutrition. Now a Monash alum, Pao works as an applications technologist at ingredients company, Hawkins Watts, where she was recommended for the position by one of her Monash lecturers. It was completing an industry placement at Kez’s Kitchen in the third year of her Nutrition Science degree that opened Pao’s eyes to a career in product development. Here she had the opportunity to put her nutrition skills into practice to help create a new low GI product. “Through this fulfilling experience I was inspired to work in product development for food companies.”

Pao now helps to create new products or improve existing ones and finds “the best thing about my job that it is project-based so it's never boring!” Most recently she worked with a client to improve the stability of cocoa drinks. She puts the research and lab skills developed in her time at Monash into action on a daily basis where “a large part of my job requires me to work in a lab and I'm glad that my degree at Monash included lab work which enabled me to become familiar and comfortable with it.”

Reflecting back on her studies, Pao is appreciative for the experience of the nutrition staff. “When I had questions about career or academics, the lecturers at Monash were always willing to help. They were always so passionate and inspiring and being a relatively small cohort, you really feel like you become part of this close knit family.”
