Enhancing Computational Neuroscience through international collaboration

We are privileged to have key international researcher, Prof Gustavo (Gus) Deco, visiting MICCN this month from Spain.

We are privileged to have key international researcher, Prof Gustavo (Gus) Deco, visiting MICCN this month from Spain.

Professor Deco is a Research Professor at the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA) and Professor (Catedrático) at the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), where he leads the Computational Neuroscience group. He is also Director of the Center of Brain and Cognition (UPF), and has recently taken up a position within MICCN as adjunct Professor.

Professor Deco is a world leader in computational neuroscience with specific expertise in biophysical modelling of large-scale brain dynamics. He will join MICCN in person from 20 September through to 6 October 2017, with the goal of establishing several collaborative projects that aim to combine modelling with experimental data.

Computational Neuroscience is a key emerging strength of MICCN, with active research programs in computational models of perception and behaviour, network analysis, and the analysis of large, multivariate data.

“Professor Deco’s unique knowledge perfectly complements the experimental work already being done at MICCN”, Associate Professor Alex Fornito said. “He will work with MICCN researchers to integrate biophysical models with experimental data, providing mechanistic insights into brain imaging measures acquired in both healthy and clinical populations.”

Dr Kevin Aquino has been appointed as a Research Fellow to drive collaborative work between Professor Deco and MICCN researchers. Dr Aquino will be working on physiologically validating existing biophysical models of brain network dynamics, constraining them with empirical data, testing their clinical utility, and combining these models with data to address fundamental questions about brain function.
