School of Music - ConservatoriumAustralian Legends of Jazz
2008 celebrates a lifetime contribution to Australian Jazz by leading Australian musician Don Burrows who turns 80 this year. Don Burrows AO, MBE (named living national treasure in 1988 and 1998) was the first Australian Jazz artist to win a gold record. He has played and recorded with the best international jazz performers including Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, James Morrison, Frank Sinatra, Cleo Laine and Stephane Grappelli. He is joined by the virtuosic players Tony Gould AM on piano and Doug de Vries on guitar. These two aficionados are at the leading edge of Jazz today. In 2005 Tony was given an award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music Education and in 2006/2007 undertook a prestigious Australia Council Fellowship. Doug de Vries is considered Australia’s leading exponent of Brazilian Music and is particularly noted for his sophisticated accompaniments, deep knowledge and daring improvisations. The Jazz Program at the Monash University School of Music - Conservatorium has a growing reputation for attracting the best young musicians. It draws exceptional teachers from the industry and is responsible for creating fantastic live performance, where the interplay between masters of the form and the energy of emerging young talent can be experienced.
