MSO Concert 2

  • BRITTEN  Peter Grimes: Four Sea Interludes
  • ELGAR Sea Pictures
  • BEETHOVEN  Symphony No.4 in B flat major, Op.60

  Featuring

  • Tadaaki Otaka conductor
  • Christianne Stotijn mezzo - soprano

Britten turned his intensely atmospheric scenic interludes and introductions from his opera Peter Grimes into a magnificent concert piece, intensely evocative of the sea and of the opera’s dark, turbulent emotions.

Another great British musical seascape, Elgar’s Sea Pictures include his hauntingly gentle Where Corals Lie and conclude with a dramatic setting of Australian poet Adam Lindsay Gordon’s The Swimmer. Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn, making her Australian debut in these performances, is a passionate performer who, only in her early 30s, has appeared in major venues around the world.

Beethoven’s lithe, powerful Fourth Symphony has long been overshadowed by the masterly symphonic achievements on either side, but it is a fantastically infectious piece, with a particularly carefree finale.
