Overcoming initially hostile critical reactions, Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto became one of the most popular of all concertos. Violinists have loved surmounting its many challenges and audiences have loved its passionate melodiousness and rhythmic excitement.

The nobility and grandeur of Brahms’ First Symphony made it an instant success.
In fact, it’s so beloved a piece of music that it is hard to credit the doubts and uncertainties the composer went through before its first performances.

The opening of Delius’ orchestral rhapsody on the Lincolnshire folk tune Brigg Fair is wonderfully evocative of the song’s words, in which the singer “rises up with the lark” to meet his true love at the fair. Alternately languorous and ecstatic, Brigg Fair is a compact masterpiece of English.
