Alexander Theatre
Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria won 4 awards at the prestigious Gilbert and Sullivan International Festival in Buxton, UK in 2007 with Robert Ray’s production of Patience. With their return to the Alexander Theatre for The Merry Widow and The Pirates of Penzance they are able to bring large, lavish productions in comfortable surroundings with easy parking. A Song to Sing O will be in the more intimate atmosphere of the historic Melba Hall, in Royal Parade, Parkville, again with easy parking and convenient public transport.
The sublime The Merry Widow is set to some of the most gorgeous melodies ever composed for an operetta, this sumptuous production was judged “the most enjoyable production since Bronhill’s in the 1960’s” (3CR Radio). Paris in 1905 - women, men in uniform, wine and waltzes. Surely this is operetta heaven! Anna, newly widowed, comes to Paris to kick up her heels and win back her first and truest love, Prince Danilo Danilovitch.
A Song to Sing O is Melvyn Morrow’s wonderfully theatrical play with music and songs, celebrates the career of George Grossmith, the first G&S patter comedian. The play is set backstage as GG makes up for his last performance at the Savoy Theatre in 1888, as Jack Point in The Yeomen of the Guard. He recounts his career, and sings songs from the roles he created such as Ko Ko, Robin Oakapple and The Lord Chancellor.
The rollicking Pirates of Penzance, a wonderful new production by James Wright. This all time favourite is Gilbert & Sullivan at its merriest, and is an ideal choice to introduce young people to the riches of light opera. From the famous Pirates, who are too tender hearted for their own good, to the bumbling, fumbling Police, this is great entertainment which never fails to amuse and delight.
