Monash College Intervention Strategy – Policy
Purpose
- To delineate a framework for the provision of learning support for students deemed to be at academic risk, as highlighted in the recommendations of the Learning + Report.
- To ensure our intervention strategy satisfies the provisions of Standard 10 of the National Code 2007.
Supporting Research and Analysis
The research underpinning this policy is contained in the document Learning +: a review of learning support at Monash College. That report has put forward a number of recommendations to enhance learning support at the College, with the most relevant to this policy being:
Recommendation 10 That Monash College develop a comprehensive intervention strategy for students 'at-risk' that will:
- Best support the academic progression of all students;
- Provide immediate intervention before students become disengaged by the feeling of failure and a self belief of lost opportunity for academic success;
- Ensure ongoing support as required by individual case management processes, overseen by the Learning Development FOSM and Learning Advisors; and
- Ensure compliance with the National Code 2007.
Standard 10.2 of the National Code 2007 states that:
- procedures for contacting and counselling identified students;
- strategies to assist identified students to achieve satisfactory course progress; and
- the process by which the intervention strategy is activated
Standard 10.5 of the National Code 2007 states that:
The registered provider must implement the intervention strategy for any student who is at risk of not meeting satisfactory course progress requirements. At a minimum, the intervention strategy must be activated where the student has failed or is deemed not yet competent in 50 percent or more of the units attempted in any study period.
Scope
This policy applies to all Monash College locations.
