INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION (MCD1040)

Purpose

The general aim of this unit is to enable students to become more effective communicators within a global environment by developing appropriate written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Students will analyse modern communication techniques, situations and devices, identifying appropriate use and success factors within a range of common situations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the factors involved in the process of communication and the changes within that process caused by social and technological change, and a multicultural society.
  2. Describe the relative importance of language based and non-verbal communication factors.
  3. Identify the related needs of reader, writer, speaker and listener.
  4. Identify appropriate communication and interpersonal skills to suit particular situations.
  5. Identify appropriate interpersonal communication techniques.
  6. Conduct research using a variety of sources and report on information using common academic written formats.
  7. Prepare and deliver an oral presentation using two or more visual aids.
  8. Present, analyse and answer arguments objectively.

Assessment

Class participation and assignments: 40%

Final examination: 60%
