INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY (MCD1170)
Purpose
This unit is designed to introduce and reinforce the fundamentals of chemistry by exploring physical and organic chemistry using a variety of theoretical and practical techniques
Prerequisites
Students should have completed an equivalent to Victorian VCE Year 11 Chemistry, Units 1 & 2
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Express chemical reactions symbolically.
- Perform simple quantitative calculations.
- Describe the basic principles involved in simple laboratory analysis.
- Describe the basic theory concerning instrumental analysis.
- Explain the concepts of equilibrium and rate, and their application to industrial processes.
- Explain the structure and naming of simple organic molecules.
- Explain the concepts of bonding between atoms and molecules.

Assignments & Practical Work: 40%
Examination: 60%
