INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY (MCD1170)

Purpose

This unit is designed to introduce and reinforce the fundamentals of chemistry by exploring physical and organic chemistry using a variety of theoretical and practical techniques

Prerequisites

Students should have completed an equivalent to Victorian VCE Year 11 Chemistry, Units 1 & 2

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Express chemical reactions symbolically.
  2. Perform simple quantitative calculations.
  3. Describe the basic principles involved in simple laboratory analysis.
  4. Describe the basic theory concerning instrumental analysis.
  5. Explain the concepts of equilibrium and rate, and their application to industrial processes.
  6. Explain the structure and naming of simple organic molecules.
  7. Explain the concepts of bonding between atoms and molecules.

Assessment

Assignments & Practical Work: 40%

Examination: 60%
