ART AND DESIGN THEORY B (MCD1320)

Purpose

This unit explores the relation between media and technology in art and design. Students will consider several key disciplines and be able to compare and contrast the employment of these technologies.

Prerequisites

MCD1280 Art and Design Theory A

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Analyse how the history of art and design technologies corresponds with a history of diverse cultural platforms and ideologies.
  2. Identify the regional development of materials and technologies in the evolution of various art and design disciplines.
  3. Compare and contrast the different purposes of various media and relate these to different disciplinary objectives.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between technologies for art and design.
  5. Determine how the dynamic between necessity and exchange value determines the development of and approaches to the employment of technology.
  6. Interpolate how regional identity and historical concepts of progress underpin approaches to technology in contemporary art & design.
  7. Demonstrate a capability of communicating soundly about art & design technologies in both written and spoken forms.

Assessment

Research task: 10%

Essay 1: 25% (800 words)

Essay 2: 35% (1400 words)

Oral presentation: 10%

Slide Test: 20% (The slide test may include multi-choice and short answer questions)
