INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS (MCD1410)

Purpose

This unit provides an introduction to programming concepts using object oriented and event driven programming techniques.

The rules of the application development life cycle are introduced, and programs are designed, developed and implemented using Java and HTML.

The fundamentals of Object-Oriented programming techniques are introduced and applied with the Java programming language.

Prerequisites

MCD1370 Problem Solving for IT

MCD1450 Contexts for I.T.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Interpret user needs as described in simple program specifications
  2. Understand the phases of the software development life cycle and the basic techniques of structured program design.
  3. Apply selection and repetition control structures in Java applications such as if-else and case to allow for selection, and dowhile, for and while loops to allow for repetition
  4. Describe the fundamental principles of object-oriented programming
  5. Code, compile, test and debug a Java program

Assessment

Assignment: 40%

Examination: 60%
