INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING APPLICATIONS (MCD1420)

Purpose

This unit provides an introduction to modern computing systems and components of the Microsoft Office suite of computer applications.

Prerequisites

Nil

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit student will be able to:

  1. Understand the principles of a word processing tool and be able to create, modify and enhance the appearance of Word documents.
  2. Understand the principles of a presentation tool and be able to create, modify and run a PowerPoint presentation with graphics, tables, charts and diagrams.
  3. Understand the principles of a spreadsheet tool and be able to create, modify, format and print Excel worksheets and use formulae and functions to perform calculations in a worksheet.
  4. Understand the fundamentals of relational databases.
  5. Use Microsoft Access to create and modify tables.
  6. Understand the principles of integration and sharing data among Microsoft office applications.
  7. Assessment

    Practical test: 25%

    Assignments: 40%

    Examination: 35%
