INTRODUCTION TO BEHAVIOURAL STUDIES (MCD1430)

Purpose

This unit forms the preparatory component to the Part 2 Behavioural Studies sequence of Understanding Human Behaviour and Lifespan Development.

Students will be introduced to the theories of social psychology which underpin the study of human behaviour. The main topics for exploration are; perception, attitude, types of behaviour and settings for behaviour. Students will also be introduced to research methods and ethical considerations in behavioural studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the main theories of social psychology which underpin the study of human behaviour and describe the historical foundation of this field of study.
  2. Describe how self-perception is developed and affected, and how impressions of others and of society are determined.
  3. Describe how attitudes are developed and influenced, and explain the link between attitudes and behaviour.
  4. Explore behaviour at work, in a social setting, and within relationships.
  5. Describe normative and deviant behaviours.
  6. Identify a range of research methods in behavioural studies and consider some of the ethical issues of research in this field.
